Daily exercise, lifestyle, and nutrition are three distinct health factors each of us can easily influence. I favor a simple nutritional philosophy that emphasizes fresh, organic foods eaten with gratitude. We are fortunate to live where fresh fruits and vegetables are available throughout the year. However, good food eaten quickly, while multi-tasking, or being emotionally stressed has little chance of delivering its full potential. In fact, poor food eaten slowly, followed by rest, will benefit you more than anything eaten too fast and furious. Relax, breathe, say grace, and enjoy the meal!
When using food to restore health, I employ a rotation diet to learn about food allergies/sensitivities, and cleansing diets to allow the digestive system to rest and regain its full potential. Cleansing diets are very popular in the Spring to reduce seasonal allergies and in the Fall to support a healthier winter. Much can be accomplished by simply removing "dairy", "wheat", "alcohol" , "caffeine" and "sugar" while limiting animal protein and increasing local vegetables and nonglutenous grains. Nutritional strategies for specific health concerns can be found in Dr. Elizabeth Lipski's "Digestive Wellness" (available for loan at my office) and all of Dr. Elson Haas's excellent nutritional books.
Throughout my career, I commonly refer to professional nutritionists who provide meal planning with select foods that address my patient's health concerns. I currently network with the "Bauman College" In Penngrove, California, founded by Ed Baumen. Ed began the first nutrition college in Sonoma County over 20 years ago, and now has campuses in Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Boulder, Colorado. He is a personal friend and fantastic nutritionist. He has shared a useful food chart and a list of nutritional guidelines for you to use in your kitchen.
I have also included "The Working Person's Cleanse" and related menus by Mary Sheila, NC. She is a senior teacher at the Baumen College of Nutrition, facilitates the "Osmosis Cleanse" at the Osmosis Spa in Freestone, California and is the director of "Occidental Nutrition". I will gradually expand the section on "Cleansing" and encourage you to consider doing a dedicated nutritional cleanse at least twice a year. As Ed Bauman says, "to feast is find, but to fast is divine!"
Feel free to send me related articles you think would benefit my patients, and I will also add space on my website for local recipes, etc.
Bon Appetite!!!
